Japan’s passive-aggressive way of forcing out workers

Rather than fire their worst workers, some Japanese companies are allegedly sending them to “banishment rooms,” where they’re given meaningless tasks such as staring at a TV monitor for 10 hours a day. The practice — reportedly in place at Hitachi, Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic — is meant to drive workers to quit of their own accord, forfeiting the continuing benefits they’d receive if they were fired.
