We’re about to have a new drinking game, kids! So, it used to be I would sit at a conference and every time a speaker said, “Millennial” everyone in the room would have to take a drink of their favorite adult beverage. Thirteen minutes into every conference every single audience member was completely drunk!
The new drinking game in 2018 will be to drink every time a speaker says, “GenZ”! It might take a while, but believe me, it’s coming! I for one can’t wait. If I have to hear one more ‘Millennial Expert’ tell me how ‘Millennials’ want to work, I’ll shoot myself! No. One. Cares. The great thing is now the world’s foremost experts on Millennials will magically overnight become the world’s foremost experts on GenZ. You like how that works?
GenZ Expert = any idiot with the ability to read three articles and build a PowerPoint deck. Sure the oldest GenZer is 23 years old, but hey, how many years in the workforce does someone really need until we know exactly every want, need and desire they have!
Okay, rant over on ‘generational’ experts.
Let’s talk about a real expert on everything in the world: Oprah! I love Oprah. Oprah should run for President.
Oprah recently spoke to a college graduating class of 22 and 23-year-olds and, of course, the media said she was speaking to Millennials. She wasn’t, she was speaking to GenZ, but again, most idiot reporters now feel like ‘Millennial’ is also the new title for ‘young people’. Oprah had some advice for these GenZers, and it came in the form of questions they should be asking themselves as they enter their professional lives:
“The way through the challenge is to get still and ask yourself, ‘What is the next right move?’ Not think about, ‘Ooh, I got all of this to figure out.’ What is the next right move? And then from that space, make the next right move and the next right move … then you won’t be overwhelmed by it, because you know your life is bigger than that one moment.”
I like it! It’s not what will I do with my life? Or what should I become? Because that stuff is huge, giant, I’m not sure I still know what I want to become. But, what is the next right move? Breaks it down to the ‘now’. Is the best move to leave college and get a job, or is now the only time I might have to travel to Europe? Should I take the job in my hometown, or do I go out and accept that job in New York?
Here a few other questions I would recommend GenZers ask themselves as they enter the workforce:
– What can I learn from every person I work with?
– What professional relationships do I have that I truly enjoy? And, how do I nurture those relationships more?
– What companies do I truly admire and want to work for, and how do I make that happen, regardless of position?
Young people are only young once! Brilliant, right? Being young has so many advantages, but when you’re young you only see the disadvantages. See? I’m almost a GenZ expert already! The key to killing it during your twenties is to take the chances you can’t take once financial responsibilities start to limit your options. Bam! Full blown GenZ expert – hurry and book me now!
I’m wondering, what do you think about this new generation entering out workforce, and what question would you advise they ask themselves when entering your work environment?
