Back in 2009, Uber exploded on the scene and created a completely new way for people to work. They launched the Gig Economy and created an entirely new employment model. For the first time, workers could earn income with no commitment to their employer. Uber drivers could wake up in the morning and they alone could decide to turn on the app and go to work and make money or stay at home and watch TV. In the old model, your employer scheduled you for days, weeks, or sometimes even months in advance, and if you wanted to keep your job you stuck to that schedule no matter what. Now, with Uber and other on-demand work apps, the balance of power has shifted, and the workers decide to turn on their app and go to work, or not.
Fast-forward to 2020 and the Gig Economy and freelancing are becoming part of every industry across America. It’s no longer just about just drivers and delivery – now large businesses and employees of all types are embracing freelancing and trying to adapt to this new future of flexible work. In fact, more than 57.3 million people in the US are freelancers today.
That number is growing so quickly, that the majority of US workers will be freelancing by 2027. Yes, according to a study conducted by Randstad USA, 60% of the population will be freelancing within the next 10 years. This is a trend that businesses can no longer afford to ignore. This new employment model is much more complex to manage for the businesses and the managers charged with finding, managing and paying this new freelancer workforce.
Fundamental to this challenge is finding technology that is built specifically to streamline the connection between work and the workers on a shift-by-shift or project-by-project basis.
Without new technology, companies can’t efficiently connect & interact with these workers
This is why AllWork is building the future of flexible work. We’re here to help corporate America connect and interact with this freelance population. We speak with enterprise clients all the time and while they’re converting more of their workforce to flexible workers, they aren’t happy with the results they’re seeing.
Most businesses are currently turning to one of two options:
1) Relying on legacy core HCM systems like Oracle, Workday, and SuccessFactors.
The problem here is that these systems were not built for managing Gig workers. Yes, they work well for full-time or part-time workers but they don’t have the technology that a company is going to need to manage an a truly flexible workforce. Most of these systems were built 10-20 years ago and they weren’t built with the Gig Economy in mind.
2) Managing on their own with manual processes.
In an effort to save money, companies will try to manage flexible workers themselves with spreadsheets, emails, text messages and a whole slew of manual, outdated processes. You can only imagine the administration and compliance nightmares that this causes. You can’t manage a large flexible team working in thousands of locations with a spreadsheet. With this approach there is also no centralized system of record to aggregate data that can make the scheduling and managing of flexible workers efficient at scale.
Workforce management designed just for freelancing
The bottom line is that without tools specifically created for managing this flexible workforce, companies are never going to see the results they want. That’s where AllWork comes in.
